In an interview I read, Santigold describes her song “L.E.S. Artistes” as about “the New York scene and the scenesters and hipsters, who are really not artists and are just pretending to be. They’re all about just being seen.” The longer I live in New York City, the more people I meet attempting notoriety as “artists” despite having nothing to show for themselves besides cute outfits and edgy haircuts. And the longer I live in New York City, the more relevant this song becomes to me. Name-droppers and forced fakers, keep it movin’.
